Departments & Courses
The pages below detail specific information for each department, including contact information for each department chair. Department chairs collaborate with the Associate Head of School, Division Directors, and the Director of College Guidance regarding major curricular decisions.
Students engage in course registration in February and March. Placement for honors and accelerated classes is completed through the academic department and the goal is to place students in the classes in which they will experience both challenge and success. We take a holistic, data and observations approach to the course placement process that involves arduous review of student records prior to making final determination for the coming academic year. For each course with an honors section, every student’s academic record is carefully analyzed in an effort to make the best possible placement. When identifying students for honors or AP classes, departments look at a combination of the following four domains: prerequisite course performance (assessment and final grades in the mid to high A range), relevant standardized testing results, placement tests, and the teacher’s assessment of readiness for more in-depth and advanced work, including more independent work. The student’s current teacher will notify student and parents of the department’s placement decision during the final month of school.
