GENERAL SGIS NEWS

ADMISSION SEASON IS HERE! We need our whole community to tell our story in preparation for admission season. Here are three simple things you can do TODAY!

  • Prospective students in grades 2-11 can experience St. George's at our October 13  "Gryphon for a Day" event. Share the information on this page with a friend!
  • Refer a friend. Friends make great classmates; tell us about someone who should be a St. George's family. Complete our online form now.

BOYS LACROSSE FALL YOUTH CLINICS: Please join the boys varsity lacrosse team this fall as they host a series of youth lacrosse clinics for elementary and middle school student-athletes in grades 5-8. This will be a non-contact clinic focusing on skill development and the basic fundamentals of lacrosse. Whether you are new to the sport or an experienced player, our varsity players and coaches are excited to teach and work with all players interested in learning more about the game of lacrosse. FALL BLOOD DRIVE OCTOBER 12: Parents, families, and friends are invited to join us for our fall blood drive on Thursday, October 12 from 8:00 am until 3:00 pm in the Senior Dining Room at the Collierville campus. This blood drive will help benefit the victims of Hurricane Irma. The more donors we get, the more points we earn, which ultimately means that more money will be donate on our behalf to Goodwill Industries of Central Florida. Drop-ins are welcome, but if you would like to reserve a specific time, you can either e-mail sabrams@sgis.org, or you can visit the Club Lifeblood website to reserve a spot online. Lifeblood recently changed the weight requirements for giving blood for students, and those will be e-mailed to students in the coming week. Please watch for permission slips coming home that require your signature. Donors are strongly encouraged to eat a hearty breakfast and drink plenty of water prior to donating. Thank you for helping us save lives!

RACE FOR THE CURE: St. George's creates teams for selected Memphis area races that widely impact our community, and you're invited to join the St. George's Independent School Race for the Cure Team on October 28, 2017. Download details.


PARENT BOOK CLUB: Parents are invited to read the middle-grade novel Goodbye Stranger by Rebecca Stead. This coming-of-age novel about friendships, silly bets, and bad decisions using technology will open the door for rich discussions to have with your child on these timely topics. Faculty members will facilitate a discussion with parents and offer tips for being wise in a digital world. Limited copies will be available for parents to check out at each campus library. Please sign up by Friday, October 13 on our google form if you plan to participate. SWIM LESSONS AT COACH ROB'S POOL SCHOOL: Coach Rob’s Pool School is a partner entity with St. George's, offers swim instruction year-round, and is conveniently located in the Compton Aquatic Center on the Collierville campus. With Coach Rob’s highly successful play-based curriculum, students have fun while developing skills and confidence. From tots to triathletes, from basic water safety to swim team there’s something for everyone at the Pool School. Classes include group lessons in Levels 1-8 (ages 3-13), Parent/Tot (ages 18 months to 3 years), and Adult. Private lessons are available by appointment. LOWER SCHOOL (grades PK-5) / Germantown AND Memphis Campuses

FALL BREAK: Fall Break begins on October 4 with a half day. Lower school students will be dismissed at noon on October 4. Students return to school on Tuesday, October 10. Have a safe break!

TOUGH ENOUGH AND LOWER SCHOOL NIGHT OCT. 20: Save the date for this fun-filled St. George's tradition. Held at the Collierville campus and beginning at 5:00 pm, Tough Enough allows lower school students to participate in grade-level races as well as a family fun run, followed by Lower School Night at the home football game. Watch for more details!

NORRIS JR. FAMILY CAMP-OUT: Families with 2nd-5th graders should watch their mailboxes for a postcard about this fun, annual event. Learn more.


LOWER SCHOOL (grades PK-5) / Germantown Campus

GRYPHON FOR A DAY: Do you know someone who would make a great Gryphon? Prospective students in grades 2-11 are invited to spend the morning at St. George's on Friday, October 13 or Friday, November 10. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience St. George's active learning and agile teaching firsthand. Visiting students will shadow current students, attend classes, and enjoy lunch compliments of St. George's.

MOCK NEWBERY CLUB FOR GRADES 3-5: Check Mrs. Winstead's veracross page for all of the details about this year's Mock Newbery Book Club. Our first meeting will be Thursday, October 12 at 3:00 pm in the Cooper Library.

EMAIL FROM DR. BURGESS FOR PARENTS OF EARLY LEARNERS: Watch your inboxes for a new email series from Dr. Stewart Burgess, Early Learning Director, full of parenting tips and tricks.

SCHOOL PHOTOS OCTOBER 12: Individual school photos will be taken on the morning of Thursday, October 12 in the Jones Commons. Homeroom teachers will bring their class to be photographed at a designated time that morning. Students should be dressed appropriately; non-patterned clothing photographs best. A make-up date is provided on November 9 should a student be absent.

CONFERENCE DAY OCT. 24/SPECIAL SCHEDULES AND EXTENDED DAY CARE CLOSED: There will be NO SCHOOL for students in Grades PK, JK, and SK on Tuesday, October 24 due to conferences. There is a noon dismissal for Grades 1-5. The extended day program is closed on this day. However, parents may drop their child(ren) into "conference care" during the time of their scheduled conference at no charge.

TINY TOTS TENNIS: The tennis program at our Collierville campus is a partner entity with the school and invites SGIS families to enjoy its programs. The Tiny Tots class is a great way to introduce ages 4-7 to tennis. Classes will be held at the Lightman Tennis Center on the Collierville campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:00-4:45 pm beginning October 17. LOWER SCHOOL (grades PK-5) / Memphis Campus

DO YOU NEED A FIELD TRIP SHIRT? Visit the Spirit Cart on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5:00pm! If you cannot come in during that time, feel free to send in your cash or check payable to SGIS in an envelope ($15 for pique polo, $25 for new dri-fit) and email Mrs. Thomas at tthomas@sgis.org with your child's shirt size. Once your payment is received, we will send the shirt home with your child. Call 901-261-3950 with any questions! Note: Dri-fit shirts will be delivered as soon as they arrive!

PARENT CONFERENCES / NO SCHOOL ON OCTOBER 24: There will be NO SCHOOL for students in grades PK-5th on October 24 due to parent conferences. Parents, please use this time to meet with your child's teacher during your scheduled conference time.

 

 

MIDDLE/UPPER SCHOOL – COLLIERVILLE CAMPUS

FALL BREAK: Fall Break begins on October 4 with a half day. Middle and upper school students will be dismissed at 12:30 pm on October 4. Students return to school on October 10.

SGIS HOMECOMING OCTOBER 13: Come join us for a (short) week's worth of homecoming festivities! Download all the details.

GATES CLOSED OCTOBER 13: The third annual Upper School Field Day takes place Friday, October 13. In order to protect the participants who will be utilizing the bridge, the Houston Levee gates will be closed mid-morning until about 3:45 pm.

CONFERENCE DAY TUESDAY, OCTOBER 24: Conferences will be held on Tuesday, October 24. Scheduling instructions will be forthcoming. All middle and upper school students will be dismissed at 12:30 on Tuesday, October 24. There will be no extended day care on conference day.

 

 

MIDDLE SCHOOL (grades 6-8)

ULTIMATE FRISBEE EVENT OCTOBER 13: Join us after school, 3:15-5:15 pm, on Friday, October 13 on the practice fields for some ultimate frisbee fun! As always, everyone is welcome A permission form is required. Snacks will be provided.

WEEKEND KAYAK CAMPOUT NOV. 10-12: Up to eight middle school students will head to the Ozark Mountains for a weekend kayaking on the Little Red River and exploring the beautiful area on multiple hikes. We will camp on the river bank, skip rocks, and cook. It truly is an unforgettable weekend. Spots are limited and will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis in the order in which they are turned in to the middle school office. Financial aid is available for this trip. NOV. 3-4 MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMPUS CAMPOUT IS FULL: This event filled up quickly and is now full. Please email Coach Ferguson at sferguson@sgis.org to be added to the waiting list. We will be camping on the lower practice field next to the Stokes Fieldhouse. However, a majority of time will be spent in the woods and on the beach alongside the Wolf River. We will be cooking out, going on a night hike, playing games, roasting marshmallows, and just enjoying the outdoors. There is no cost for the trip. Download more info.

 


UPPER SCHOOL (grades 9-12)

PSAT/NMSQT Administration- October 25: On October 25, 2017, we will be administering the PSAT/NMSQT to grades 10 and 11. The start time is 8:00 am, and there is no makeup date for this assessment. The ninth grade will follow their schedule as normal, and twelfth grade will be involved in activities off site. It is very important for tenth and eleventh graders to arrive early because testing will begin promptly at 8:00 am.

COLLEGE COFFEE: Upper School Parents, please join Team College Guidance (Timothy Gibson and Jessica Hardy) for a Parent Coffee on Thursday, October 12 at 8:30 am in the Upper School Lounge or 5:30 pm in the Dining Room. Senior Parents, we would love to give you an update about where we are in the application process with the senior class. Freshman, Sophomore and Junior Parents, we will chat with you about summer opportunities for students. As always, we will answer your questions and have our planners to schedule individual meetings with you.

PITNER DRIVING SCHOOL FALL REGISTRATION: We welcome Pitner Driving School to the Collierville campus on November 6-17. Pitner will provide 30 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of driving instruction. Interested students (who are between 15-19 years of age) and their parents should visit the website at www.pitnerdriving,com or call 901-767-4704.

TRIP TO AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND, & FIJI: If you've ever thought about taking a trip to the South Pacific, here is your chance to check this one off of your bucket list! Ms. Erlandson, middle school American history teacher, will be leading a 12-day tour to Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji in early June of 2018 (exact tour dates TBA) for students currently in 9th-12th grade. Fall enrollment is now open but will close on October 31. Enroll now to lock in the current price and reserve your spot on the tour. The price includes airfare and transportation, hotel accommodations, breakfasts and dinners, guided sightseeing tours led by expert local guides, museum entrance fees, and travel insurance. Parents are invited to sign up for the trip as well. Enrollment can be completed online through the EF tour website.
